Genealogy Home for Crawford County

This is a simple place to start as you build your genealogy research. Our friendly staff is more than willing to point you in the right direction concerning your genealogy research.

Items available in our office of the Crawford County Clerk:

Birth and death records from 1886 through 1911 are available for public viewing. Any certified copy of the birth or death record on file with the County Clerk's Office will be made available to you for a pre-paid fee of $3.00 per certified document. The County Clerk will sign the record personally and affix his official seal for your research. After July 1, 1911, all record keeping duties were assumed by the State of Kansas. The office responsible for these documents is the Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka.

The Index of Names for Tombstone Transcriptions from 1860 through 1976 for all cemeteries located within Crawford County is available for public viewing.

Marriage certificates are available from Crawford County District Court, PO Box 69, Girard, KS 66743. Their phone number is 620-724-6211. They do not respond to e-mails, and require that all research requests be made in writing accompanied by the appropriate payment.   • The Crawford County Genealogy Library is located on the second floor of the Pittsburg Public Library at 308 N. Walnut in Pittsburg, KS. The phone number is 620.231.8110 ext. 24. Their vast collection of information includes birth and death records for 1886 through July 1, 1911, information on area cemeteries, Federal and Kansas census information, coal mining information, and some District Court Records. You can find funeral home records, area town historical information, land records, and marriage and military records. They have naturalization records from 1869 through the 1950's and may obituaries cut out of local newspapers, mostly of people born before 1900. Ted Leigh is the County Coordinator.
  • The Girard City Clerk has birth records for Girard, Walnut, and surrounding rural areas from 1911 through 1988, and birth records for the City of Pittsburg for 1909 through 1982. They also have death records for Girard, Walnut, and surrounding rural areas from 1911 through 1988, and death records for the City of Pittsburg for 1909 through 1982. They also maintain records for the Girard Cemetery. You can contact them by phone at 620.724.8918. The Girard City Office is located at 120 N. Ozark in Girard.
