Crawford County Health Services

This document contains information relating to the services offered by the Crawford County Health Department that are available to Crawford County employees and residents.


Crawford County Health Department Services

The Crawford County Health Department was established to help individuals and families deal with health problems they might not otherwise be able to obtain or afford.  The Health Department provides services to all residents of Crawford County and the surrounding area, without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, or economic status.

The Crawford County Health Department strives to provide optimal community health services throughout the lifespan with special emphasis on the prevention of disease and the education of persons in our care.

Crawford County Health Department services are available on a sliding scale: prices are dependent upon, and adjusted for the income level of individuals and family sizes.  Services will not be denied due to inability to pay.

Crawford County Health Department offers the following services:

Blood Pressure Screenings
Available by request when nurses are available or by order of a physician for monitoring purposes.  Monthly blood pressure clinics are held at congregate meal sites.

Chronic Disease Risk Reduction
A Program that targets smoking, lowery dietary fat, and increasing physical activity to reduce risk of chronic disease.

Community Follow-up
Investigational and educational services are provided for communicable diseases.  Home visits are provided for infants and prenatal risk reduction.

Community Learning Garden
Individuals can participate in a gardening project sponsored in collaboration with Crawford County Master Gardeners.

Community Screenings
Appointments are available for cholesterol, hemoglobin, and glucose screenings.

Educational Films and Pamphlets
The Health Department will help arrange and assist with program including ordering pamphlets and films.  A pamphlet library is maintained for community reference and use.

Environmental Health
The Environmental Health program defines and helps insure disposal of domestic waste.  It regulates and controls the development of private wastewater on-site systems.  It insures safe storage, collection, and disposal of solid waste.  It establishes appropriate management approaches to control of nonpoint source pollution and defines wastewater requirements for single family and subdivision housing located in Crawford County.

Healthy Start Programs
The Health Department’s Healthy Start Visitors contact and support pregnant women and children up to one year of age under the supervision of a registered nurse.

Immunizations
The Health Department is equipped to administer all state mandated childhood vaccines as well as adult Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. On-site clinics are provided for flu and pneumonia, school clinics for tetanus and kindergarten pre-enrollment.  TB skin testing is available and information on international travel can be provided upon request.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
A federally funded supplemental nutrition program.  Individuals eligible are: pregnant women, recently delivered women, infants, and children up to 5 years of age.  Food vouchers for formula, cereal, milk, eggs, cheese, juice, and peanut butter or beans.  WIC is an equal opportunity program.

FREE to Know
FREE to Know is a program for women 50 years of age and over that allows underinsured and/or uninsured to have annual breast screenings (mammogram and clinical breast exam) at no charge.  It also allows women 40 years of age and over to have yearly cervical screenings (pap smear and pelvic examination) at no charge.

KAN Be Healthy
Children ages 0-21 years of age who are eligible for the Medicaid program and who have a valid Medicaid card may receive free child wellness screenings.  The screening consists of a physical exam, vision screening, hearing and lab tests, immunizations and appropriate referrals for services.  Appointments can be scheduled by telephone. Immunization records, a physician’s referral, and a current Medicaid card should be presented at the time of the appointment.

Lead Screening
Lead screening is provided for children under the age of six years and siblings of children who show high levels of lead.

Child Care Licensing Agency
The Health Department conducts licensing surveys of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for day care facilities, preschools, residential youth centers, and attendant care programs.  We facilitate enrollment of registered day care homes. We offer childcare information and education and investigate complaints and nonlicensed caregivers.

School Health Screenings
We provide contract services to schools including hearing screenings, vision screenings, scoliosis screenings, immunization audits, and pre-kindergarten round-ups.

Special Services for Children
The Health Department initiate and assists parent’s application for special services for children in Kansas due to congenital, physical, or other handicapped conditions.

Tobacco Education
The tobacco education program provides education on the risks associated with tobacco use and assists those who desire to stop using tobacco products with a cessation program.

Straight Talk Program
The Straight Talk Program addresses the risks and realities of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, alcohol, and drug use.  Teen speakers offer presentations to are schools and organizations encouraging family communication and positive life choices.
