Comments from the public

Public comment taken from the 2005 vendor fair regarding polling place technology.

The following are the comments as taken verbatim from the surveys returned by individuals who attended the 2005 vendor fair to preview the equipment which will be deployed in Crawford County polling places in 2006.

1. I liked all of them.

2. We will need some more training to train the voters.

3. The voting staff will have to be trained well to make the voter comfortable at the first election.

4. The demonstrations were very informative and easily understood

5. Think there will be more advance voting after the first or second time these are used.

6. The voting staff will have to be trained better.

7. This was a very informative demonstration. I appreciate the opportunity to view all of the machines.

8. Make sure to transition the process to election voting gradually. Too much at once can overwhelm older voters.

9. Strongly urge consultation of storage and back up systems. Might check out how many other states use the respective systems?

10. The older people will just come to vote and then leave because they won’t understand.

11. Too much confusion to understand any of it.

12. Thanks R.J.

13. Cost is important when you are comparing similar machines.

14. Very interesting.

15. Very helpful, cost should be a factor that will help the county.

16. Cost would be an issue; we’re in the 21st century for sure.

17. Demonstrations were very helpful.

18. We need to upgrade technology to the future.

19. I have been a precinct chairman for 35 years and this is quite an important step.

20. They were all good.

21. Start Girard: Hope the change will be effective and bring Crawford into compliance.

22. It will be hard at first for older people.

23. This was very interesting thanks for having us check this out.

24. Consolidate, consolidate. Save money to help pay for more machines.

25. Overheard the Infinity person and it sounded like he had a good maintenance plan to the cost of the others.

26. Start with simple machines to gain voter confidence then gradually into more complicated machines.

27. Diebold is more comfortable for the voter.

28. With the population we deal with the less technology the better.

29. The ES&S System impressed me overall.

30. Diebold Optical Scanner was too difficult to operate.

31. The Diebold AccuVote touch screen is too complicated.

32. Hard to hear with all vendors talking in such a small room.

33. The interim between paper and all machine voting will certainly be a challenge.

34. Do you really think we can teach "old dogs" new tricks?

35. Keep all machines simple and keep the material of how to operate whenever needed.

36. A technician turned his back to audience when he pushed the button and then you couldn’t hear what he said. I thought he should be able to stand behind it and push them as to not deflect the sound of his voice.

37. Thanks for allowing our input.

38. Diebold AccuVote optical scan system seemed more easily understandable. Did not like the card system as well. Voting technologies was okay while Microvote was too small and hard to read and understand. ES&S was too complicated even though using paper ballots. If we are going to change let’s change.
